Novo mesto is an economic, educational, culture and sport centre of the Dolenjska region. Due to its cultural and historic importance it is one of the most significant Slovene cities.
Novo mesto student club (Društvo novomeških študentov DNŠ) that works in favour of students´ interests and aims to improve the quality of student life runs three enterprises: bar LokalPatriot, publishing house and bookshop Goga and Youth Hostel Situla. They traditionally organise different popular international events such as Fotopub, Jazzinty, wine festival Cvičkarija. They also organise numerous concerts, displays, travel lectures and theatre performances. In summer rock festival Rock Otočec, Novomeški poletni večeri (Novo mesto Summer Nights), Muzejski vrtovi (Museum Gardens), Noč na Krki (Night at the River Krka) and Beli teniški turnir (White Tennis Tournament) are very popular.
The history of city can be seen in the museum Dolenjski muzej Novo mesto that has permanent and numerous temporary exhibitions. Novo mesto currently also has the first professional theatre in its history Anton Podbevšek Theatre. Numerous cultural and social events are organised also by Kulturni center Janeza Trdine (Culture Centre Janez Trdina), Galerija Simulaker (Gallery Simulaker), Jakčev dom(The Jakac House), Knjižnica Mirana Jarca (The Library of Miran Jarc), Galerija Krka (Gallery Krka), Galerija Pri Slonu (Gallery By the Elephant), Galerija Kralj (Gallery Kralj), Čajarna pri Starem mostu (The Teahouse by the Old Bridge) and Narodni dom (The National House).
Novo mesto is also a sport centre. We are proud of our sport legends such as Leon Štukelj, ballet dancers Pia and Pino Mlakar, cyclists Sandi Papež, Bogdan Fink, Gorazd Štangelj, Uroš Murn, Jure Zrimšek, gymnast Jasna Dokl, athlete Igor Primc and basketball player Matjaž Smodiš. There are two sports halls (Marof and Leon Štukelj) available for playing basketball, handball and volleyball. Free time can also be actively spent at tennis courts at Loka and football and athletic stadium Portovald. There are many other activities available:rent-a boat and boating on the river Krka, rent-a-bike and cycling, tennis, riding, rafting, balloon flights, golf, panorama flights, skiing.
